Frequently asked questions

What is ALPCA?

The Automobile License Plate Collectors Association is a community of hobbyists who collect, study and trade vehicle registration plates from around the world. This platform is the ALPCA members' home for cataloguing collections, browsing the reference archives, and connecting with other collectors.

I'm new to collecting — where do I start?

Pick a focus that excites you: a single US state or Canadian province through the years, a birth-year run, a plate type (passenger, motorcycle, commercial), or a country. Browse the Archives to see what exists, then start cataloguing what you already own.

How do I add a plate to my collection?

From your Members Area, tap Add, snap or upload a photo, and record the country, region, year, serial, slogan and condition. That's it — your plate is catalogued and (optionally) searchable by other members.

How are plates graded?

Collectors commonly grade condition from Mint (unused, as-issued) down through Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor, based on paint, gloss, rust, dents and straightness. Original finish and legibility matter most; repaints reduce value.

How should I clean a plate?

Go gently. Start with mild soap and water and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasives and harsh chemicals that strip original paint — over-cleaning destroys value. When in doubt, leave honest patina alone and ask on the discussion list.

How do I date a plate?

Use the Archives: match the base design, colours, slogan and serial format to the year ranges recorded for that region. Registration stickers, validation tabs and manufacturing marks also help pin down the exact year.

Is it legal to collect license plates?

Owning and collecting expired, out-of-service plates for hobby purposes is legal in most places. Displaying a valid-looking plate on a vehicle it isn't registered to is not. Always follow your local motor-vehicle laws.

Can I buy, sell or trade on ALPCA?

Yes — mark plates for sale or trade, keep a wanted list, and make offers to other members. ALPCA is a cataloguing and community platform; it doesn't process payments or act as escrow, so arrange transactions directly and responsibly.
